Tranmere story

Chichester-born centre-forward Alan Arnell began in local football with Chichester City and Worthing before joining Liverpool in 1953. His first-team debut against Blackpool in December 1953 brought a goal, and he went on to score a hat-trick against Huddersfield Town in 1956.

Arnell joined Tranmere Rovers on a free transfer from Liverpool in February 1961. He later played for Halifax Town and Runcorn, where he finished his playing career and subsequently served as a director. Away from football, he ran a newsagent in Liverpool, then pubs in Sussex, before working as a declaration officer at racecourses. Arnell died in Chichester in May 2013.
